"direct rip-off of the movie "Murder in New Hampshire"." 2009-10-15
By L. Hunt (Citizen Of The World)
"Murder in New Hampshire" is a much better movie, is a True Crime story, and was made before "To Die For". They are both accurate depictions of the Pamela Smart story, and are extremely similar. "To Die For" was hyped as a comedy. Unbelieveable. I'm sure that the victim's loved ones don't find it the least bit funny. Neither do I.

 "Blind ambition gone wrong" 2009-09-05

Suzanne Stone (Nicole Kidman) will do anything to be the next Barbara Walters. She starts out as a small town weather girl and while making a documentary with some high school students, hatches a diabolical scheme to kill her husband (Matt Dillon) whose ambitions don't match her own.

Loosely based on the true story of Pamela Wojas Smart, this movie is a clever black comedy focusing on the blind ambition of Kidman's character. She plays her as an outwardly dumb blonde who is, in fact, ruthless and willing to do anything to be famous. Joaquin Phoenix plays Stone's teenage lover who blindly carries out her plan. He's quite young-looking and completely believable as the adolescent pawn in her deadly chess game.

The story is filmed like a documentary, in keeping with Suzanne's goal of being a celebrated interviewer. Having the characters speak into the camera reduces the tension but increases the humor, as most of the people involved are completely gullible and fall under Suzanne's spell. It's a macabre story played mostly for laughs with good acting all around.

"KIDMAN IS "TO DIE FOR" IN THIS BLOOD-CHILLING FILM..." 2009-08-23
By Betty L. Dravis (Silicon Valley, CA)
In To Die For Nicole Kidman delivers a magnificent, realistic performance as Suzanne Stone, a devious New Hampshire housewife who dreams of becoming the top TV personality in the world. As a beautiful, manipulative weather girl with a modicum of talent for the job, she uses her feminine wiles to reach her dreams of fame and glory. Unfortunately, she's also greedy and grasping, so she doesn't stop there.

Although I think this is a spoiler, other reviews, including Amazon's editorial review, have already mentioned that when her husband gets in the way of her plans, she tricks some gullible teenagers into murdering him. Joaquin Phoenix is superb in the role of the teen boy who is so infatuated with her he will do anything for her. Her sexual escapades with him in front of the other kids are shocking.

When I viewed this film it seemed like a drama/thriller with deadly consequences to me, so I was surprised to read that it's supposed to be a dark comedy. I generally enjoy satire and dark comedy, but I saw nothing funny about this movie. If, indeed, it's a dark comedy, then it's pitch black, IMO.

I did find the cold, hard, nonchalant attitude of the character portrayed by Kidman to be amusing at times--in a shake-your-head-in-bewilderment kind of way. That made me wonder how a person could ever become so calculating. She seemed to lack a conscience, so perhaps that explains it.

The only thing remotely comical in To Die For is Suzanne Stone's grandiose opinion of herself.

I should have had a clue that it was a satire when I read the name of the brilliant director Gus Van Sant on the credits; he's known for that type of movie and I think he's one of the most outstanding directors in Hollywood.

But no matter what they call this well-crafted, well-acted movie, Van Sant drew the best from all the actors. Matt Dillon was excellent in the role of the faithful husband, Joaquin Phoenix perfect in the part of the obsessed teenager and Kidman deserved the 1995 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

This is a gripping, blood-chilling, fact-based movie, with so many twists and turns it will make your head spin. The surprise, satisfying ending is to die for!

Five stars all the way! I recommend it for adults.

I watched this on the strength of my admiration for the lead actors. As in any good thriller, the characters do things that normal people would not do--but then we wouldn't have a movie, would we? Each mistake leads to another perilous situation; that's part of the fun of watching...sort of. But this isn't supposed to be a fun movie. The acting is excellent, the fear is palpable, the madness consuming. HOWEVER, the characters did make lots of stupid mistakes, and the hokey ending kind of blew it for me. Plus, the tragedy that kicks off the movie is quickly forgotten as the saga unfolds.

Nicole Kidman was at the top of her game in this film. It is a crackling good suspense movie, that unwinds its chills in slow twists of plot, and superb dialogue. Amenabar quietly, subtly, and ever so deftly reveals the twisted secrets of a haunted mansion, seemingly perpetually wrapped in fog, and seething with dark psychological underpinnings.

THE OTHERS is a trance-like walk into a deviously, evolving nightmare, with a deliciously macabre finishing flourish. Not many ghost stories are comparable to THE SIXTH SENSE, or THE INNOCENTS. This lusciously atmospheric morsel is- in spades!

A ghost story unlike any other. Director Alejandro Amenabar's The Others is one of those far too rare jewels of the genre. With a strong plot, memorable characters, haunting atmosphere and more layers than one can uncover in a couple of viewings, this film is a masterpiece of film-making.

Unlike the vast majority of horror films out there that have to rely on slash fests, vulgarity, nudity and buckets of blood to try to smokescreen for weak plots of less than mediocre and forgetful films, The Others, is on that short list category with films like Jack Clayton's The Innocents, from the 1961 which was based on a Henry James story, Robert Wize's The Haunting, from 1963, adapted from Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House and Stanley Kubrick's The Shining adapted from Steven King's masterpiece novel in 1980.

That's right. Anyone who liked this movie is stupid. This is just another slasher movie where the main characters are complete morons, and are required to do the dumbest things conceivable in order for the plot to progress. "Oh yeah, we just picked up a sketchy guy who says everyone on his boat is dead - how about I leave him alone with my wife on this boat while I go check it out." -- Or "Oh yeah, I've got a shotgun, but I think I'll have sex with the bad guy instead of shooting him." Or "Now that I've drugged him and he's knocked out, I'll tie him and leave him below by himself so he can wake up and easily escape." Guys - THIS IS STUPID CRAP - IT IS NOT A GOOD MOVIE. Oh yeah, how about the gratuitous dead baby scene in the beginning? I just can't believe 25 Amazon reviewers gave this movie 4 or 5 stars.

Really - I mean, are you other reviewers serious? Do you own shares in the movie? Do you just think Kidman was hot or something? Seriously - check out the New York Times review of this - it's pretty accurate.
